Styling an Undercut with Pomade: Guide for Top Hair and Contour

The undercut is one of the most popular men's hairstyles. The sides and back are cut short while the top stays long. This contrast only works when the top hair is styled cleanly. Pomade is ideal for this because it combines hold, shine and control.

The starting point

For an undercut with pomade, the top hair should be at least 8 to 10 cm long. The longer the top, the more variations are possible. The sides can be cut as a hard undercut with a sharp edge or as a soft transition.

What you need

  • oil-based pomade with strong, pliable hold
  • a fine comb for the lines
  • optionally a blow dryer for volume

Step by step to the undercut

1. Prepare the hair

Wash your hair and towel-dry it. For more volume, blow-dry the top in the desired direction. How to combine blow dryer and pomade is shown in pomade and blow dryer.

2. Warm the pomade

Take a pea-sized amount and rub it between your fingertips until it is soft. With thick top hair you can add more later.

3. Work it in from back to front

Spread the pomade first on the back part of the top hair and work your way forward. This avoids too much product at the hairline above the forehead.

4. Shape it

Comb the top hair in the direction of your chosen variation. Make sure the hair falls cleanly over the transition to the short sides.

5. Check the contour

Check the line between top and sides in the mirror. Smooth down any stray hairs with a small amount of pomade.

Three variations of the undercut

Undercut as a slick back

All the top hair is combed back. The look is elegant and powerful. Technique details in the guide to the slick back with pomade.

Undercut with a side part

A clean part divides the top hair, which is combed to the side. This variation is ideal for the office. More in side part with pomade.

Undercut with a quiff

The front of the top hair is shaped upwards and back with volume. How to do it is explained in quiff with pomade.

Common mistakes

  • Too much product at the roots: the hairstyle looks heavy. Better to work from back to front.
  • Pomade on the short sides: usually unnecessary and makes the sides look greasy.
  • No touch-up cut: the undercut only works with fresh contours. Plan a barber appointment every three to four weeks.

The right pomade

NO STYLIST Pomade Pure Lemongrass gives the top hair strong, pliable hold and a silky shine. The oil-based formula with cera alba and lanolin stays pliable throughout the day, so you can correct your hairstyle with a comb at any time.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the top hair need to be for an undercut?

At least 8 to 10 cm. For a slick back or quiff, more like 10 to 15 cm.

Which pomade is suitable for an undercut?

An oil-based pomade with strong hold, so the long top hair stays in shape all day.

How do I get the undercut back in shape if it falls during the day?

Run a comb through it briefly. Oil-based pomade can be restyled at any time.
