Pomade without Silicones, Parabens and PEGs: How to Read the Label

Finding a pomade without silicones, parabens and PEGs is easy once you know how to read the ingredient list. These substances have typical endings and names. Here we show you how to recognize them and why they're used in styling products.

Spotting silicones

Silicones add shine and a smooth feel. On the list they usually end in -cone, -conol or -siloxane, for example dimethicone or cyclopentasiloxane.

Spotting parabens

Parabens are preservatives. You'll recognize them by the ending -paraben, such as methylparaben or propylparaben. They're needed because products containing water would otherwise spoil quickly. There are other preservatives too, such as phenoxyethanol.

Spotting PEGs

PEGs are emulsifiers. They combine water and oil into an even cream. On the list they appear as PEG with a number, for example PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil.

Other typical additives

  • Polymers such as PVP or acrylates copolymer for hold
  • Colorants, recognizable by CI followed by a number
  • Parfum as an umbrella term for scent, more in pomade without parfum

Why oil-based pomade can do without them

Most of these additives are mainly needed in water-based formulas. Without water there's no need for emulsifiers to combine water and oil, and no need for preservatives against spoilage. An oil-based pomade can therefore manage with just a few bases. The direct comparison is in drugstore or manufactory pomade.

Frequently asked questions

Are silicones bad for hair?

Silicones are approved and do their job. Some people still prefer to avoid them. The ingredient list lets you decide for yourself.

How do I recognize a short ingredient list?

Count the lines up to the scent components at the end. The fewer bases, the easier it is to see what's inside.

Is oil-based pomade automatically silicone-free?

Not always. Oil-based products can contain additives too. Checking the list is always worth it. More criteria in our pomade buying checklist.
